Wrestling Federation of India Concludes Senior Open Ranking Tournament 2026
Tournament Overview
On Monday, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) announced the successful conclusion of the men's freestyle events at the Senior Open Ranking Tournament 2026, hosted at Nandininagar Mahavidyalaya in Gonda. The event attracted a remarkable turnout of 593 wrestlers competing in various weight categories.
Men's Freestyle Highlights
In the 92 kg freestyle category, Deepak Punia from Haryana clinched the gold medal, securing the top national ranking. He reached the finals after defeating Raja (also from Haryana) in the semifinals and went on to triumph over Vansh (Haryana) in the final match.
In the heavyweight division of 125 kg, Rohit (Haryana) advanced through a tightly contested match against Anirudh (Haryana) in Match No. 179, leading to Anirudh's exit from the tournament. Rohit ultimately earned a bronze medal in this category.
Transition to Greco-Roman Events
As the tournament shifted focus to Greco-Roman wrestling, several athletes made significant progress in the knockout stages. Umesh successfully moved past the quarterfinals in the 82 kg division, securing a spot in the semifinals.
In the 87 kg category, Sagar, Manoj Kumar, Manav Sharma, and Tejpal each won their quarterfinal matches, ensuring their places in the semifinals.
In the heavier weight classes, Abhimanu and Ashish have both confirmed their spots in the gold medal match for the 97 kg category, while Mehar Singh has advanced to the final of the 130 kg tournament.

Sanjay Singh, President of the Wrestling Federation of India, commented on the tournament's progress, stating, "The conclusion of the freestyle events today showcased exceptional skill, highlighted by Deepak Punia's commendable run to secure the 92 kg gold. As the Greco-Roman matches intensify, we continue to see the high caliber and depth of our domestic athletes."
