Concerns Raised by Senior Citizens Regarding Parliamentary Conduct

New Delhi: A group of over 200 distinguished senior citizens, which includes former ambassadors, retired military personnel, bureaucrats, and senior lawyers, has voiced their concerns regarding the behavior of Rahul Gandhi, the senior Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. They argue that his actions undermine the dignity and effectiveness of the Indian Parliament.

The letter, which has been signed by 204 notable individuals, features 116 retired army officers, 84 former bureaucrats, four ambassadors, and four advocates.

Released by former Jammu and Kashmir DGP S.P. Vaid, the letter addresses the citizens of India, stating, “The events of March 12 are alarming. Parliament serves as the highest platform for democratic discussion, where the collective will of the populace is expressed. It is rightly viewed as the temple of democracy, where elected officials convene to discuss matters of national significance. Regrettably, Shri Rahul Gandhi has consistently lowered the standard of public discourse and decorum through theatrics both within and outside Parliament.”

The signatories express that such behavior indicates a pattern driven more by personal privilege than respect for democratic institutions, treating Parliament as a stage for provocation rather than a venue for serious discussion.

They emphasize that valuable public time and resources are wasted, and parliamentary proceedings should not be trivialized in ways that compromise the functioning of this essential democratic institution. They argue that Rahul Gandhi's actions, aimed at questioning the government, are tarnishing the reputation of both the country and its democracy. The fact that such behavior comes from someone in the significant role of Leader of the Opposition is particularly troubling.

The letter continues, “As guardians of a constitutional institution that represents the democratic aspirations of over a billion citizens, Members of Parliament must be aware that their actions carry both symbolic and institutional weight. The credibility of Parliament is strengthened when its members adhere to the traditions of propriety and restraint that have historically characterized parliamentary life.”

The signatories, who have dedicated decades to public service, express their deep disappointment at witnessing repeated attempts by Rahul Gandhi and his associates that threaten to weaken the effectiveness of this democratic temple.

They assert, “As citizens committed to preserving and enhancing India’s democratic institutions, it is our duty to highlight conduct that diminishes the dignity of Parliament, an institution that embodies the sovereign will of the Indian people. The events observed reflect a concerning sense of arrogance and entitlement that has no place in a constitutional democracy, especially from the Leader of the Opposition. Shri Rahul Gandhi must apologize to the nation for this behavior and reflect on his actions. The Parliament of India holds a unique and elevated status within the constitutional framework of the country.”

The letter concludes, “The dignity of Parliament is not merely a matter of tradition but a fundamental aspect of the constitutional ethos that governs our democracy. Therefore, the conduct of Members within the Parliament must adhere to the highest standards of propriety and institutional respect.”

The signatories also criticized Rahul Gandhi and other Members of Parliament for being seen sitting on the steps of Parliament enjoying tea and biscuits, describing this behavior as entirely inappropriate for members of the nation’s highest legislative body. They argue that the steps of Parliament should not be a stage for spectacle or political theater, as such actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for established norms of behavior and decorum, reflecting an attitude of arrogance and a troubling lack of respect for an institution that embodies the democratic will of the people.

The letter emphasizes that parliamentary practices and long-standing conventions recognize that the sanctity of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha extends to all areas within the parliamentary precincts, including stairs, corridors, and lobbies. These spaces are not incidental but integral to Parliament itself, and the expected conduct therein must reflect the institution's dignity, ensuring that the solemnity, authority, and institutional sanctity of Parliament are fully maintained.
