CBI Summons Vijay in Connection with Karur Stampede Investigation

Chennai: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has summoned Vijay, the founder and president of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), to appear in New Delhi on January 12.

This summons is linked to the tragic stampede in Karur that resulted in 41 fatalities. The incident took place on September 27 during a political rally organized by the TVK in Veluchamipuram, where an unexpectedly large crowd gathered.

Vijay, who has recently entered the political arena, spoke at the rally, which attracted a significant number of supporters. As the crowd grew, chaos ensued, leading to the stampede.

In response to public outcry and calls for an independent investigation, the case was transferred from local police to the CBI.

The agency is currently reviewing crowd management protocols, the permissions granted for the rally, and the involvement of organizers and party officials.

As part of the investigation, senior TVK members Anand, Adhav Arjun, and executive Nirmal Kumar were questioned by the CBI in Delhi for nearly two hours.

After their interrogation, Nirmal Kumar informed the media that they had provided video evidence related to the stampede to assist the investigation.

Initially, there were rumors about Vijay being summoned, which some TVK leaders dismissed as unfounded. However, it has now been confirmed that the CBI is seeking Vijay's account regarding the rally's organization and crowd management.

This summons is particularly noteworthy as it coincides with the upcoming release of Vijay's film, Jana Nayagan, on January 9.

Vijay is expected to appear in New Delhi on January 12 to assist with the ongoing investigation. He officially launched the TVK in February 2024, marking his shift from film to politics.

Since its inception, the TVK has attracted large audiences to its events, establishing itself as a significant political entity in Tamil Nadu.

The CBI's investigation into the Karur stampede continues, with officials stating that accountability for any failures in crowd control and event management will be assessed based on documentary, video, and witness testimonies.
