Vijay Interrogated by CBI in Karur Stampede Case

New Delhi/Chennai: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted an extensive six-hour interrogation of actor and TVK leader Vijay on Monday regarding the tragic stampede incident in Karur, officials reported.

According to sources, the Tamil film icon will be summoned again for further questioning as there are additional clarifications needed.

Although the CBI requested his presence on Tuesday, Vijay sought a postponement due to the Pongal festival, which the agency has accepted, promising to provide a new date.

Vijay arrived at the CBI headquarters in a black Range Rover at approximately 11:29 AM, navigating through heavy security.

After completing the necessary procedures, he was directed to a team within the agency's anti-corruption unit investigating the stampede that occurred on September 27, 2025, resulting in 41 fatalities and over 60 injuries in Tamil Nadu's Karur.

He exited the CBI premises around 6:15 PM after nearly six hours of questioning, where officials posed various inquiries related to the rally associated with the unfortunate event.

In addition, the CBI has also interrogated S Davidson Devasirvatham, the former Additional Director General of Police (law and order) in Tamil Nadu, concerning the case.

To manage the anticipated large crowd of Vijay's supporters, multiple units of the Delhi Police and Central Armed Police Forces were deployed around the CBI office to avert any potential protests.

A small group of fans managed to blend in with the media outside the CBI office to catch a glimpse of the star.

One fan, Aiyanar, who works as an operations manager for a Noida-based multinational corporation, shared, "We are about 40 fans here just to see the actor. We all live in Delhi."

Vijay arrived in Delhi via a chartered flight from Chennai, accompanied by several colleagues from his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

The CBI has also questioned various office bearers of TVK as part of the investigation.

The federal agency took over the case from a Special Investigation Team (SIT) following a directive from the Supreme Court, which has been gathering evidence related to the stampede.

In October of the previous year, the Supreme Court instructed the CBI director to appoint a senior officer to oversee the investigation.

Additionally, a three-member supervisory committee led by former Supreme Court judge Ajay Rastogi was established to monitor the CBI's inquiry.

The bench, which included Justices J K Maheshwari and N V Anjaria, remarked that the stampede has left a significant impact on the public consciousness across the nation.

They emphasized the importance of safeguarding the fundamental rights of the families who lost loved ones in the incident.

Highlighting the political implications of the case, the court noted that senior police officials had made public comments that could undermine public confidence in a fair investigation.

The bench stated, "Restoring public faith in the investigative process is crucial, and ensuring that this investigation is conducted impartially and without bias is essential."
