Why Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit is Calling Out BMC's Diwali Campaign
Ashoke Pandit Critiques BMC's Diwali Awareness Efforts
Mumbai: Renowned filmmaker and activist Ashoke Pandit has expressed his discontent with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) regarding its recent campaign discouraging the use of firecrackers during Diwali.
Pandit raised concerns about the lack of similar advisories from the BMC during other religious celebrations like Eid and Christmas.
In a passionate video directed at BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, he criticized the civic body for prioritizing celebrity endorsements over genuine public education about Hindu festivities.
In his video, he stated, “Honourable Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide ji, we do not require guidance on how to celebrate Diwali or how to protect the environment.”
He further questioned, “Why has the BMC become so enamored with glamour? Why involve celebrities to lecture us on environmental issues during our festivals?”
He continued, “I have never seen you addressing issues during Eid or Christmas. Has the BMC ever been this proactive in advising how to celebrate Eid or how to avoid animal sacrifices in public? I have not witnessed this on your platforms.”
He added, “I have yet to see you discourage firecrackers during Christmas. It seems that only Hindu festivals attract your attention for such lectures. Why is the BMC involved in this?”
Pandit criticized the BMC for neglecting pressing civic issues, stating, “You fail to address illegal structures and the poor condition of roads from Goregaon to Malad. Politicians are celebrating while you ignore these problems. Instead of focusing on our festivals, prioritize your responsibilities.”
He firmly stated, “Who are you to instruct us on how to celebrate Diwali? We are responsible individuals who know how to honor our traditions. Direct your lectures to those who genuinely need guidance.”
He concluded with a strong plea, “These same individuals come to our industry to lecture us, yet they remain silent during other festivals. How much longer will you disrespect our religion? I urge you to retract your statements and stop lecturing us on our celebrations. Thank you.”
Pandit's comments arise amidst a backlash against the BMC's Diwali campaign featuring actress Dia Mirza.
The BMC had released a video of Mirza urging Mumbai residents to adhere to the Bombay High Court's guidelines regarding firecrackers and to minimize noise pollution during the festivities. The video also highlighted that using firecrackers in public spaces was prohibited.
In response, Mumbai BJP president Ameet Satam criticized the campaign, asserting that the city does not require lessons on Diwali celebrations from an actress, as these traditions are deeply embedded in the culture.
Following the backlash, the BMC removed the video featuring Dia from its social media platforms without providing an official explanation.
This controversy follows the Bombay High Court's call for the Maharashtra government and civic authorities to launch awareness initiatives aimed at reducing air and noise pollution during festivals, suggesting the involvement of celebrities and influencers to enhance public outreach.
