Why Did President Droupadi Murmu Question the Venue Change for Tribal Event?
President Murmu's Discontent Over Event Attendance
Siliguri: On Saturday, President Droupadi Murmu voiced her disappointment regarding the low attendance at a tribal community event near Bagdogra airport. She questioned the rationale behind moving the venue from Bidhannagar and noted the absence of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her cabinet members during her visit.
The President remarked, "Typically, the Chief Minister should be present to welcome the President, along with other ministers. However, she was not in attendance. The Governor has changed and could not make it either. Despite the fixed date, I have come here. Nevertheless, I appreciate those who did attend."
Murmu further stated, "If the event had taken place at Bidhannagar, it would have been more successful due to the ample space available for attendees. I am unsure why the state administration did not allow the meeting there. The current location makes it challenging for people to attend. It seems the state government may not prioritize the welfare of tribal communities, which could explain their absence here."
Expressing a personal connection, she added, "Mamata Banerjee is like a younger sister to me, and I am also a daughter of Bengal. I am puzzled as to why I was not welcomed here. I do not know if she is upset, leading to the venue change. Regardless, I wish everyone well."
Highlighting the broader issues in organizing such events, Murmu commented, "As I was en route to this international conference, I sensed that there were individuals opposed to this event occurring. It appears that some do not wish for the Santals to advance, learn, and unite for strength."
Originally, Murmu was invited to the annual program at Bidhannagar in Siliguri. However, officials stated that security and logistical concerns prompted the venue change to Goshaipur, near Bagdogra airport.
Upon her arrival on Saturday afternoon, only a small number of attendees were present. Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb was the sole representative from the state government to greet her at the airport.
Typically, protocol dictates that the Chief Minister or a state minister should be present to receive the President.
Meanwhile, in Kolkata, Mamata Banerjee continued her sit-in protest for the second consecutive day against the alleged arbitrary removal of names from West Bengal's electoral rolls.
