Why Are Opposition MPs Protesting in Parliament? The Controversy Over Bihar's Voter Roll Revision
Ongoing Protests by Opposition MPs
New Delhi: For the seventh day in a row, members of the INDIA coalition, including Sonia Gandhi, chairperson of the Congress parliamentary party, have staged protests within the Parliament House complex. Their demonstration is against the Election Commission's recent revision of voter rolls in Bihar, which they are demanding be reversed.
Before the parliamentary session began, Sonia Gandhi, along with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other opposition members, voiced their dissent through slogans and protests against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar.
A prominent banner displayed during the protest read 'SIR- Loktantra Pe Vaar', as they gathered on the steps of the Makar Dwar of Parliament to continue their demonstration.
Holding placards that urged to 'Stop SIR', numerous opposition MPs from parties such as Congress, DMK, TMC, Samajwadi Party, RJD, and various Left parties joined in, chanting slogans.
The opposition has been vocal in both Houses of Parliament regarding the SIR, claiming that the Election Commission's actions are intended to 'disenfranchise voters' in Bihar ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. They are calling for a thorough discussion on this matter in both Houses.
