Why AAP is Rallying at Jantar Mantar: A Call for Action Against the Chief Election Commissioner
AAP's Call to Action
New Delhi: On Thursday, leaders from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) urged citizens to gather at Jantar Mantar on October 2 to protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, calling for his resignation.
The demand for Kumar's resignation has been echoed by various opposition parties, citing issues related to voter deletions amid the ongoing SIR process.
In a video message, Manish Sisodia, the former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, emphasized the importance of attending the protest, stating that the right to vote is currently at risk, and if not protected, other rights may soon follow.
Sanjay Singh, an AAP MP in the Rajya Sabha, highlighted that over 130 million names have been removed from the electoral rolls by the Election Commission of India.
Singh remarked that this significant number indicates a troubling trend, with the Election Commission centralizing control, leading to questions even from within its own ranks. He urged citizens to join the protest to safeguard their voting rights.
Former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi accused the BJP of attempting to undermine voting rights through Kumar's actions, asserting that democracy itself is under threat. She also called for participation in the rally.
In response to the planned protest on Gandhi Jayanti, Delhi Police have denied permission and increased security measures in New Delhi, deploying Central Armed Police Forces in anticipation of a large gathering.
