A Tribute to Kamala Maharana

Kendrapara: Kamala Maharana, a prominent figure in Kendrapara district, passed away on Saturday night at the age of 66. She was celebrated for her innovative approach to recycling waste into beautiful household items.

Maharana had been receiving treatment at a private hospital in Cuttack following injuries from a fall at her home on May 28. Upon hearing of her passing, many notable individuals visited her home in Gulanagar village to offer their condolences. Her funeral took place on Sunday at the local cremation site.

For more than eight years, she dedicated herself to converting discarded plastics and other non-biodegradable materials into artistic products, raising awareness about environmental issues and sustainability. She also empowered local women through self-help groups, providing them with valuable skills.

Her contributions gained national attention when Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged her work during the 98th episode of his radio show, 'Mann Ki Baat'.

During a campaign visit to Odisha in a previous election, Modi honored her by touching her feet, a moment that sparked significant conversation across the nation.

Maharana also made headlines for sending a handmade rakhi to the Prime Minister and for creating caps for the leaders of the Army, Navy, and Air Force during 'Operation Sindhu Sudarshan'.
