Nand Kishore Yadav Takes Office as Nagaland's New Governor
Kohima: On Friday, veteran politician Nand Kishore Yadav was sworn in as the 23rd Governor of Nagaland. The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar of the Gauhati High Court during a modest ceremony at Lok Bhavan in Kohima.
Attendees included Nagaland's Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Deputy Chief Ministers Yanthungo Patton and T.R. Zeliang, along with members of the state Cabinet and high-ranking civil, security, and military officials. The event was overseen by Chief Secretary Sentiyanger Imchen.
The Chief Minister extended his congratulations to Yadav on his new role as Governor.
President Droupadi Murmu announced the appointment and transfer of Governors and Lieutenant Governors for six states and two union territories on March 5.
As part of this reshuffle, Yadav, a former Bihar Minister and Assembly Speaker, was appointed as Nagaland's Governor, succeeding Ajay Kumar Bhalla, who had been managing the state since August 25 of the previous year while also serving as the Governor of Manipur.
Bhalla, a former Union Home Secretary, was assigned this additional responsibility by President Murmu on August 16, following the passing of Nagaland Governor La. Ganesan on August 15 at the age of 80.
At 73, Yadav's political journey began with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1969, and he became involved with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in 1971. He led the Bharatiya Janata Party's Bihar unit from 1998 to 2003 and held various significant positions within the Bihar government.
In February 2024, Yadav was elected as the 17th Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly. His appointment as Governor of Nagaland is viewed as a testament to his extensive political career and contributions to public service.
Yadav has been elected seven times as an MLA from the Patna Sahib constituency, previously known as the Patna Paschim Assembly seat, representing the BJP.
