What’s Next for K Annamalai? Speculations Rise Over His Political Future
K Annamalai's Future in Politics Remains Uncertain
Chennai: Amid ongoing rumors regarding his dissatisfaction within the BJP and potential plans to establish a new political party, K Annamalai, the Tamil Nadu BJP leader, announced on Monday that he would clarify his position in the next two days.
When questioned about the possibility of launching a new political entity, Annamalai, prior to his departure for Delhi, informed reporters at the airport that he would provide clarity soon.
"Please wait. We will sit down and talk in two days," he stated when pressed about the speculation surrounding his trip to the national capital, where he is expected to meet party president Nitin Nabin amid rumors of his departure from the party.
Annamalai's recent opposition to the CBSE's decision to implement a three-language policy for Class IX students this academic year has intensified speculation about his dissent against the Centre, leading many to believe he is preparing to start his own party.
The former IPS officer, who played a significant role in uniting TTV Dhinakaran and former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam for the 2021 Assembly elections, has kept a low profile since the party leadership replaced him with Nainar Nagenthran and renewed its alliance with the AIADMK ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
While party members from Coimbatore anticipated his candidacy in the upcoming elections, he later confirmed his decision to withdraw from the race.
Following the NDA's disappointing performance in the recent elections, where they secured only one seat, there have been internal discussions within the BJP regarding state leadership. The party's aspirations to establish a strong presence in Tamil Nadu were thwarted by the Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
A source within the BJP indicated that Annamalai is unlikely to leave the party, as he may be offered a more significant role. However, some of his supporters in Coimbatore are advocating for him to create a new party as an alternative to the TVK.
