What’s Next for Iran? Trump Considers Kharg Island Amid Rising Tensions
Escalating Tensions in the Persian Gulf
In Dubai, President Donald Trump has suggested the possibility of seizing Iran's Kharg Island oil terminal in the Persian Gulf. This comes as the U.S. and Israel continue their military actions against Iran, despite emerging signs of progress in ceasefire negotiations. Iran has retaliated by targeting critical infrastructure in Kuwait and northern Israel.
During ongoing diplomatic efforts led by Pakistan to resolve the conflict, Trump mentioned that Iran had permitted 20 oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, interpreting this as a gesture of goodwill. Concurrently, with 2,500 U.S. Marines deployed in the area and more on the way, he raised the prospect of taking control of Kharg Island.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Trump remarked, "Maybe we take Kharg Island, maybe we don’t. We have a lot of options."
Iran's Military Actions Intensify
Sirens were activated near Israel's primary nuclear research facility, which has been a frequent target recently. The Israeli military reported intercepting two drones launched from Yemen, where Iranian-backed Houthis have joined the conflict.
A fire erupted at an oil refinery in Haifa, one of Israel's two refineries, possibly due to a missile strike or debris from an interception. Fortunately, the fire was quickly contained.
Iran has escalated its attacks on Gulf Arab nations, with Saudi Arabia intercepting five missiles aimed at its oil-rich Eastern province. Bahrain also issued a missile alert, and a fireball was seen over Dubai as a missile was intercepted.
In Kuwait, an Iranian strike on a power and desalination facility resulted in one death and ten injuries, according to state media. Desalination plants are vital for water supply in the Gulf region, and previous attacks have already damaged similar facilities.
Israel Strikes Back
Israel's military has launched a series of strikes targeting Iranian military infrastructure in Tehran, with explosions reported in the capital. Iranian state media confirmed damage to a petrochemical facility in Tabriz due to an airstrike.
In Lebanon, where Israel has conducted ground operations, an Indonesian peacekeeper was killed, and three others were injured by an explosion near a southern village.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced plans to expand military operations in southern Lebanon, focusing on the Iran-aligned Hezbollah group.
Rising Oil Prices Amid Conflict
Iran's assaults on regional energy infrastructure and its control over the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial shipping route for global oil, have led to soaring oil prices and heightened fears of a worldwide energy crisis.
Brent crude oil prices surged to approximately USD 115, reflecting a nearly 60% increase since the onset of hostilities between the U.S., Israel, and Iran on February 28.
As pressure mounts on Trump to conclude the conflict, the U.S. has proposed a 15-point plan to Iran, which includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz for shipping. In response, Iran has outlined its own five-point plan, emphasizing its sovereignty over the strategic waterway.
Diplomatic Efforts and Military Posturing
Pakistan has announced plans to host discussions between the U.S. and Iran, although details regarding the nature of these talks remain unclear. Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar indicated that negotiations would occur soon.
Trump stated that the U.S. is engaging in both direct and indirect negotiations with Iran, despite Iran's claims of no ongoing talks. He expressed optimism about the negotiations but acknowledged the unpredictability of dealing with Iran.
Iran's parliament speaker dismissed the talks in Pakistan as a pretext for increasing U.S. troop presence in the region, asserting that Iranian forces are prepared to respond aggressively to any American military actions.
Potential Military Actions and Casualties
In the Financial Times interview, Trump hinted that a military operation to seize Kharg Island could lead to a prolonged U.S. presence in the region, stating, "I don’t think they have any defense. We could take it very easily."
The U.S. has already conducted airstrikes targeting military positions on Kharg Island. Iran has threatened to retaliate with a ground invasion of Gulf Arab nations and to mine the Persian Gulf if U.S. troops land on its territory.
Experts warn that any amphibious assault on Kharg would require navigating the Strait of Hormuz and much of the Persian Gulf, and maintaining control over the island would be challenging due to its proximity to Iranian artillery.
Casualty Figures Rise
In Lebanon, officials report over 1,200 fatalities and more than 1 million displaced individuals. Five Israeli soldiers have also died in the conflict.
Iranian authorities claim that more than 1,900 people have been killed, while 19 deaths have been reported in Israel.
In Iraq, where Iranian-backed militia groups are involved, 80 security personnel have lost their lives. Additionally, 20 fatalities have been recorded in the Gulf states, and four in the occupied West Bank.
