Abhishek Banerjee's Request to CID

Kolkata: Abhishek Banerjee, who serves as the General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress and is a member of the Lok Sabha, has requested additional time to meet with the West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) regarding a case involving signature discrepancies.

A party insider revealed that Banerjee has formally reached out to the CID, asking for a postponement as he continues to recover from health issues stemming from an incident on May 30, where he faced harassment while visiting the family of a party worker in Sonarpur, located in the South 24 Parganas district.

The source indicated that Banerjee's condition remains concerning due to the attack he experienced. "He is suffering from jaw pain and overall body soreness, which is why he is unable to respond to the CID summons at Bhabani Bhawan," the insider stated.

Additionally, it was mentioned that Banerjee has several medical tests pending, which will require time to complete. "He prefers to take more time before appearing before the CID," the source added.

Banerjee received a summons from the CID on Monday afternoon after being notified to participate in the investigation concerning the forgery of signatures by Trinamool MLAs.

In light of this situation, the CID has established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to delve into the allegations of forged signatures among Trinamool Congress MLAs. This team is reportedly led by an officer of DIG rank, along with a DSP and two inspectors.

Banerjee's upcoming appearance is tied to inquiries regarding inconsistencies in the signatures of party MLAs related to nominations for significant roles within the West Bengal Assembly.

This development follows the recent incident of harassment he faced in Sonarpur.

The CID had issued a notice for his interrogation on May 30. Initially, investigators attempted to deliver the notice to his residence on Harish Mukherjee Road. Upon learning that he was at his other home in Kalighat, they proceeded there to hand him the notice personally.

Banerjee has since expressed his willingness to cooperate with the investigation while ensuring he has appropriate legal representation.

The notice is reportedly connected to the ongoing CID probe into discrepancies in the signatures of certain Trinamool Congress legislators on a resolution that nominated the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, along with two deputy leaders and the party's Chief Whip.

Prior to the resolution's submission, Banerjee, acting as the party's general secretary, had sent a letter to the Assembly Secretariat proposing Sovandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of Opposition, Nayna Bandyopadhyay and Asima Patra as deputy leaders, and Firhad Hakim, who is also the Mayor of Kolkata, as Chief Whip. However, Speaker Rathindra Bose insisted on a resolution that included the signatures of Trinamool MLAs. When discrepancies were identified in some signatures, the matter was escalated to the CID.
