WhatsApp Users Face Account Suspensions Amid Policy Review
Mass Account Suspensions Cause User Outrage
On Monday evening, a wave of panic swept across various regions, including India, as numerous WhatsApp users found their accounts unexpectedly blocked for 24 hours. Users reported receiving messages indicating that their accounts were under 'review', rendering them unable to access any features of the app. Following this widespread suspension, many users took to social media to express their frustration and concern.
In response to the situation, a spokesperson for WhatsApp stated that the company continuously works to prevent misuse of its platform and suspends accounts that may violate its policies.
WhatsApp's Official Statement
The spokesperson explained, "We strive to stay ahead of those attempting to misuse our service and ban accounts to protect other users. Occasionally, mistakes occur, and when they do, we work swiftly to rectify them so users can resume chatting as soon as possible."
Timing of the Issue
This issue emerged around 8 PM Indian Standard Time, as users began reporting that their accounts had been placed under review. A message on the app indicated that the account activity and device information were being checked to ensure compliance with WhatsApp's service terms, with users typically receiving results within 24 hours. The review screen provided users with information about responsible usage of WhatsApp and details regarding stolen phones and compromised accounts.
User Reactions to Sudden Restrictions
Many affected users expressed their disappointment over the sudden restrictions on social media. One user mentioned that their account was disabled without any explanation despite attempts to appeal, while another claimed that their account was suspended without warning, even though they were only using the official WhatsApp app, which is essential for their work.
A user on X stated, "WhatsApp has placed several accounts under review for 24 hours. On Monday evening, many users found their accounts suddenly under scrutiny... As a result, they were unable to use the app's features for 24 hours." They further noted, "This action has caused distress among users in India and other locations, leading them to voice their complaints on social media."
Meta's Response to Parliamentary Committee
According to reports, the social media giant Meta informed a parliamentary committee on Monday that it is willing to apologize for a temporary ban imposed on a Facebook post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Several MPs had criticized this action and called for accountability, suggesting legal action. During a meeting of the parliamentary standing committee on information technology, members questioned Meta about its compliance with Indian laws, arguing that despite generating significant revenue from the country, the company was not adhering to the legal framework.
