Owned by Meta, this messaging platform has already begun allowing users to reserve usernames ahead of the feature's full rollout later this year. This new option aims to enhance privacy, especially when individuals join group chats or initiate conversations for the first time. Once activated, users who select a username will be able to chat without displaying their phone numbers during initial interactions with others or businesses.

How Will This New Feature Function?

According to WhatsApp, users can reserve their preferred username by updating to the latest version of the app. They can find this option by navigating to settings, then account, and finally selecting username. To assist users in choosing an available and unique handle, the platform has introduced a username generator. With over three billion users worldwide, WhatsApp has initiated reservations to give people a better chance of securing their desired username before the full launch. The company has also made it easier for content creators, organizations, and small businesses to maintain a consistent identity on its platform. Eligible users will be able to claim the same username they already use on Instagram or Facebook. WhatsApp has stated that it will not create a public directory for searching usernames. Instead, if someone wishes to contact a user for the first time, they must know the correct username. Additionally, an optional username feature will allow users to have more control over who can message them. This feature will gradually become available to everyone in the coming months, and users will receive an in-app notification when usernames are accessible in their country.
