New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially released the timeline for the 17th Vice Presidential election, scheduled for September 9.
This election aims to fill the vacancy in the Vice President's position, following a notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on July 22. The newly elected Vice President will serve a complete five-year term starting from the date they assume office.
As per the ECI's announcement, the election notification will be published on August 7, with the deadline for nominations set for August 21. The scrutiny of nominations will take place on August 22, and candidates can withdraw their nominations until August 25. If necessary, polling will occur on September 9, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with counting on the same day.
The Vice President is elected by an electoral college made up of members from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. For the 2025 election, this college consists of 788 members, including 233 elected members (with five seats currently vacant in the Upper House) and 12 nominated members from the Rajya Sabha, along with 543 elected members from the Lok Sabha (with one seat vacant in the Lower House).
At present, the electoral college has 782 members due to these vacancies.
The election process will utilize a secret ballot system based on proportional representation with a single transferable vote. The ECI has designated the Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha as the Returning Officer for this election.
Voting will take place in Room No. F-101, Vasudha, First Floor, Parliament House, New Delhi.
It is important to note that the Constitution mandates that the election for the Vice President must be conducted via secret ballot. Therefore, voters are required to maintain the confidentiality of their votes. Open voting is not permitted, and revealing the ballot to anyone under any circumstances during Presidential and Vice Presidential elections is strictly forbidden.
