What to Expect from the Upcoming Trump-Putin Summit in Alaska?
India's Support for the Trump-Putin Summit
New Delhi: On Saturday, India expressed its approval of the upcoming summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which is set to occur in Alaska on August 15.
The Ministry of External Affairs, represented by spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, stated, "India welcomes the agreement between the United States and Russia for a meeting in Alaska on August 15, 2025. This summit could potentially resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and pave the way for peace. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi has frequently emphasized, 'This is not an era of war.'"
The statement from New Delhi also indicated that India is prepared to assist in these diplomatic efforts.
Earlier in the day, Trump confirmed the summit with Russia, which may also influence the 25% punitive tariff that the U.S. has imposed on India for purchasing Russian oil.
In a series of rapid developments, Trump announced on Truth Social on Friday, "The highly anticipated meeting between myself and Putin will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska."
He added, "Further details to follow."
This announcement came shortly after Trump expressed disappointment with Putin on Thursday, despite acknowledging progress in their discussions.
In preparation for the summit, Putin reached out to Prime Minister Modi on Friday evening to update him on his talks with Trump regarding Ukraine.
According to the Kremlin's account of their conversation, Putin shared significant outcomes from his meeting with U.S. President's Special Envoy Steven Witkoff, emphasizing the special partnership between Russia and India.
India's External Affairs Ministry noted, "While expressing gratitude to President Putin for his thorough assessment, the Prime Minister reiterated India's consistent stance on the peaceful resolution of the conflict."
Friday marked the deadline Trump had set for imposing additional sanctions on Moscow and secondary tariffs on nations purchasing energy from Russia.
Witkoff's meeting with Putin in Moscow earlier this week laid the groundwork for the upcoming summit.
Trump remarked, "We had some very good talks with President Putin" and suggested that there was "a very good chance" that peace could be achieved soon.
In a media briefing on Friday, he mentioned a potential deal involving "some swapping of territories for mutual benefit."
