What to Expect from the Indian Navy's Grand Display in Kerala This Navy Day?
Indian Navy's Spectacular Operational Demonstration
New Delhi/Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian Navy is gearing up to demonstrate its maritime capabilities with a significant operational display off the coast of Kerala on Wednesday, coinciding with the Navy Day festivities.
President Droupadi Murmu will grace the occasion as the chief guest at Shangumugham Beach in Thiruvananthapuram.
The event will feature 19 major warships, including the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, a submarine, four fast intervention boats, and 32 aircraft, comprising fighter jets, surveillance planes, and helicopters, according to a senior naval officer in Thiruvananthapuram.
This grand event aims to provide citizens with a unique glimpse into the various aspects of the Indian Navy's multi-domain operations, fostering maritime awareness and celebrating India's rich naval heritage.
It will vividly showcase the Navy's impressive combat capabilities, technological advancements, and operational readiness, reflecting the nation's increasing maritime strength and self-sufficiency.
The operational demonstration will include coordinated maneuvers by frontline assets, symbolizing the Navy's capacity to 'deliver power and precision across the maritime spectrum.'
Officials noted that the event will highlight the seamless integration of surface, sub-surface, and aerial resources, showcasing the Navy's readiness to protect India's maritime boundaries.
This demonstration is part of the Navy Day celebrations, which occur on December 4.
During a press briefing in Delhi, Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi announced that this year's Navy Day theme is 'Combat-ready, Cohesive, Atmanirbhar Navy: Safeguarding National Maritime Interests Anytime Anywhere Anyhow.'
He explained the significance of December 4, stating it commemorates the Indian Navy's bold and decisive strike on Karachi in 1971, which altered the course of the war.
Admiral Tripathi also mentioned that this operational display at Shangumugham Beach marks the first time the event is being held there.
Last year, the demonstration took place at Puri Beach in Odisha, a Blue Flag Beach, with President Murmu in attendance. The previous year, it was hosted in Maharashtra's Sindhudurg.
This initiative continues the Indian Navy's efforts to hold the event at locations beyond major naval bases, officials noted.
Regarding the Operational Demonstration 2025, Vice Admiral Sameer Saxena, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Naval Command, stated that it will reflect the Navy's readiness and 'ability to deliver power and precision across the maritime spectrum.'
He emphasized that Navy Day also acknowledges the Indian Navy's role in Operation Trident during the 1971 war, serving as a tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of its personnel.
The 1971 India-Pakistan War began on December 3 and concluded on December 16, following the fall of Dhaka, which resulted in Pakistan's surrender and the establishment of Bangladesh from what was previously East Pakistan.
Navy Day serves as a reminder of the naval force's 'crucial role' during the 1971 War, where missile boats from the Indian Navy executed a daring attack on Karachi harbor as part of Operation Trident.
'This decisive action not only showcased India's maritime strength but also demonstrated precision, courage, and strategic brilliance,' officials remarked.
The operational demonstration will highlight the Indian Navy's advanced operational platforms and its commitment as the 'preferred security partner' in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), guided by the broader vision of MAHASAGAR — Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions.
In line with the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, the demonstration will feature a variety of indigenously developed assets, showcasing India's growing self-reliance in defense manufacturing, as previously stated by the defense ministry.
These platforms represent the Navy's ongoing efforts under the 'Make in India' initiative to create a modern, technologically advanced, and future-ready maritime force.
'The celebration will also emphasize the Navy's state of readiness and deterrent capability, as demonstrated during Operation Sindoor, reaffirming its ability to strike with precision, speed, and dominance,' the ministry added.
The operational demonstration off the Kerala coast will celebrate the Indian Navy's 'maritime excellence as a combat-ready, cohesive, credible, and 'aatmanirbhar' force, safeguarding the seas for a 'Viksit' and 'Samriddha Bharat' (developed and prosperous India), according to the defense ministry.
