Strengthening India-Canada Relations

New Delhi: On Thursday, India announced that the upcoming discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney next week will serve as a significant opportunity to enhance the partnership between the two countries.

Carney's four-day visit to India will commence on Friday, marking his inaugural trip as Prime Minister.

This visit aims to rejuvenate the bilateral relationship, which has faced challenges following a diplomatic incident related to the assassination of a Khalistani separatist in 2023.

His first destination will be Mumbai, where he is scheduled to engage in various business activities and meet with prominent corporate leaders and financial experts from both India and Canada.

Carney is set to arrive in New Delhi on Sunday, with the two leaders expected to engage in comprehensive discussions on Monday.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the leaders will assess the progress made in various sectors of the India-Canada Strategic Partnership, building on their previous meetings in Kananaskis last June and Johannesburg last November.

This visit is particularly crucial for the ongoing normalization of India-Canada relations, as stated by the ministry.

The two prime ministers have previously committed to fostering a constructive and balanced partnership, rooted in mutual respect for each other's concerns, strong people-to-people connections, and increasing economic synergies.

The upcoming meeting is anticipated to reaffirm the positive trajectory and shared aspirations of India and Canada in cultivating a forward-looking partnership, as highlighted by the MEA in a statement.
