What to Expect from Canadian PM Mark Carney's Visit to India: A New Era of Partnership
Canadian PM Mark Carney Meets EAM Jaishankar in New Delhi
New Delhi: On Monday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney ahead of Carney's scheduled bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
After their meeting, Jaishankar expressed his pleasure, stating, "It was a delight to meet Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada this morning in New Delhi. I appreciate his dedication to establishing a progressive partnership between our nations."
Carney, who is accompanied by his wife Diana Fox Carney, began his first official visit to India on February 27, arriving in Mumbai before heading to New Delhi on Monday.
Upon his arrival in the capital, Carney took to social media, saying, "I have arrived in New Delhi to meet with Prime Minister Modi. Canada and India are two ambitious nations eager to collaborate. We are developing new partnerships in energy, talent, innovation, and AI to enhance security and prosperity for our citizens."
Later that day, Carney is set to engage in delegation-level discussions with Prime Minister Modi at the Hyderabad House.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), both leaders will assess the progress made in various sectors of the India-Canada Strategic Partnership, building on their previous meetings in Kananaskis (June 2025) and Johannesburg (November 2025). They will also review ongoing collaborations in critical areas such as trade, investment, energy, critical minerals, agriculture, education, research, innovation, and cultural exchanges.
Additionally, the two leaders will discuss regional and global issues and participate in the India-Canada CEOs Forum in New Delhi.
This visit is particularly significant as it marks a pivotal moment in the normalization of India-Canada relations. The Prime Ministers have previously committed to fostering a constructive and balanced partnership based on mutual respect, strong people-to-people connections, and increasing economic synergies. Their upcoming meeting is expected to reinforce the positive trajectory and shared vision for a forward-looking partnership.
During his time in Mumbai, Carney engaged in business activities and met with Indian and Canadian CEOs, industry leaders, financial experts, and educators, including representatives from Canadian Pension Funds operating in India.
Upon his arrival in Mumbai, Carney referred to India as "the world's fastest-growing major economy" and expressed his eagerness to create partnerships that would open new avenues for Canadian businesses and workers.
In a video shared on social media, he remarked, "India is the world’s fastest-growing major economy. We just arrived in Mumbai to connect with business leaders and establish partnerships that will unlock new opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses."
Prime Minister Modi last interacted with Carney during the G20 Summit in Johannesburg in November 2025, where they discussed India's ambitious goal of achieving $50 billion in bilateral trade by 2030.
