New Delhi: On Monday, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong is set to arrive in New Delhi to engage in the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and conduct bilateral discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, amidst an increasing emphasis on regional security and collaboration in the Indo-Pacific.
Ahead of her trip, Wong characterized the Quad as an essential alliance in light of rising global uncertainties. She stated, "I will be traveling to India to take part in the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and engage in the Australia-India Foreign Ministers’ Framework Dialogue."
Wong underscored the strategic significance of the Quad, asserting, "In these unpredictable times, the Quad serves as a crucial partnership—four nations collaborating to foster a peaceful, stable, and prosperous future for the Indo-Pacific region."
The Quad consists of Australia, India, Japan, and the United States, focusing on enhancing cooperation in vital areas such as maritime security, resilient supply chains, critical minerals, infrastructure development, disaster response, and emerging technologies.
Wong emphasized that the four nations are achieving tangible results on mutual interests, including maritime security, critical minerals supply, infrastructure projects, and disaster relief efforts.
During her stay, Wong will also participate in the 17th Australia-India Foreign Ministers’ Framework Dialogue with EAM Jaishankar. She remarked on the increasing importance of their bilateral relationship, stating, "The partnership between Australia and India has never been more significant."
She further highlighted that both nations, as Comprehensive Strategic Partners, are enhancing collaboration in trade and investment, defense and maritime security, climate initiatives, energy transition, strategic technology, education, and skills development.
"The Albanese Government is committed to fortifying Australia’s relationships and intensifying efforts in both new and existing coalitions like the Quad as we strive to secure Australia’s future in an increasingly unstable world," Wong added.
At the invitation of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Wong, along with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, will attend the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on May 26.
The Ministry of External Affairs noted that this visit signifies ongoing high-level engagement among Quad partners and reinforces their collective vision for a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.
The official statement indicated, "In alignment with the Quad vision for a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, the Ministers will build upon discussions held in Washington, DC on July 1, 2025. They will share insights on advancing Quad cooperation in priority areas, assess progress on current Quad initiatives, and reflect on recent developments in the Indo-Pacific and other international matters of shared concern."
The meeting is anticipated to concentrate on key cooperation areas, including maritime security, resilient supply chains, infrastructure development, critical and emerging technologies, climate action, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. Discussions will also evaluate ongoing Quad initiatives aimed at bolstering regional stability and economic growth.
