What to Expect at the Somnath Swabhiman Parv: PM Modi's Grand Celebration
Prime Minister Modi's Visit to Somnath
On Saturday evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to arrive in Somnath, Gujarat, to participate in the festivities of the Somnath Swabhiman Parv, as confirmed by officials.
The temple town is adorned for the occasion, with events scheduled from January 7 to 11 as part of the celebrations.
The Somnath Swabhiman Parv serves as a significant representation of India's spiritual heritage, celebrated with immense respect and enthusiasm nationwide. In a post on X, PM Modi expressed his excitement about joining the divine chanting of the Omkar Mantra at the Somnath Temple on Saturday night around 8 p.m.
The following morning, he will engage in the Shaurya Yatra, honoring the brave souls who defended the temple, before visiting and worshipping at the site. He will also participate in a public event related to the celebrations.
A spectacular drone show is planned for Saturday night as part of the festivities.
This event commemorates the sacrifices made by countless Indians to protect the temple, which continues to inspire future generations, according to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).
Additionally, the program marks the 1,000th anniversary of the Somnath temple's invasion by Mahmud of Ghazni.
Despite numerous attempts to destroy it over the centuries, the Somnath temple remains a powerful emblem of resilience, faith, and national pride, thanks to collective efforts to restore it to its former glory.
Following India's independence, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel spearheaded the restoration of the temple, culminating in its reopening to devotees in 1951, attended by then-President Rajendra Prasad.
The upcoming 75th anniversary of this historic restoration in 2026 adds special significance to the Somnath Swabhiman Parv, which will feature participation from hundreds of saints and 72 hours of continuous chanting of 'Om' within the temple grounds.
On January 11, the Prime Minister will partake in the Shaurya Yatra, a ceremonial procession honoring those who sacrificed their lives for the temple, which will include a symbolic procession of 108 horses representing valor and sacrifice.
Following this, PM Modi will offer prayers at the temple and take part in a public function celebrating the Somnath Swabhiman Parv.
Somnath is located in the Gir Somnath district of Gujarat, over 400 km from Ahmedabad.
