What Sparked the Massive Protests in New Delhi? A Deep Dive into the CJP Movement
Protests Escalate in New Delhi
New Delhi: On Sunday, security forces detained numerous demonstrators as they attempted to march from Connaught Place's Inner Circle and Rajiv Chowk towards Jantar Mantar, marking the second day of protests organized by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP).
Footage captured protesters chanting slogans demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Law enforcement intervened to detain the protesters, with some being forcibly taken towards police buses despite their resistance.
The area was heavily secured to prevent the protesters from reaching Jantar Mantar. The CJP had pledged to persist with their demonstrations, announcing another gathering at the protest site at 10 am on Sunday after their efforts were thwarted the previous day.
Those detained on Sunday reported being mistreated during their arrests.
Members of the Students' Federation of India (SFI) and other student groups were also apprehended while heading to Jantar Mantar from Rajiv Chowk.
According to a statement from the SFI, their All India President Adarsh M Saji, Delhi State Secretary Sooraj Elamon, Central Executive Committee member Abhijith Manilal, and numerous members were attacked and detained at Rajiv Chowk.
"In the video, you can see blood coming from Adarsh's forehead. We will not forget this. We will continue to protest in greater numbers across the nation!" he declared.
In another video, Saji questioned the police's actions, stating that the protesters were unaware of any wrongdoing as they were demonstrating peacefully.
Another protester claimed that many had sustained injuries due to police "manhandling," asserting their intention to transform the entire national capital into a protest zone.
These detentions followed the CJP's renewed call for a protest at Jantar Mantar on Sunday, as police maintained extensive security measures. Over 30,000 police and paramilitary personnel were deployed throughout the city.
On Saturday, CJP leaders, including Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka, were detained amid an unprecedented security crackdown in Delhi, with more than 7,000 protesters arrested at various locations as police blocked their access to Jantar Mantar.
Several opposition leaders, including former chief ministers Arvind Kejriwal, Mamata Banerjee, Pinarayi Vijayan, and Manik Sarkar, were also detained while trying to participate in the protest.
The CJP and opposition parties are demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar due to alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
