What Sparked the Massive Protest in Agartala Over Hindu Rights in Bangladesh?
Protest Rally in Agartala
Hundreds of members from Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal gathered in Agartala to demand action from the Indian government regarding what they describe as escalating violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. The demonstrators expressed their concerns over the rising incidents of targeted attacks on the Hindu minority since the political shift in Bangladesh last August.
Sankar Ray, Secretary of VHP's Tripura chapter, stated that the situation has deteriorated significantly in recent months, leading to ongoing protests in Tripura. He emphasized that the global community is aware of the severe atrocities faced by Hindus in Bangladesh, recalling a previous demonstration held in front of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission.
Ray highlighted a recent incident where two media outlets were attacked, and a Hindu man named Dipu Chandra Das was brutally killed by a mob under false accusations. The 27-year-old garment factory worker was dragged through the streets and murdered, with his body later set on fire after being tied to a tree in Mymensingh.
The VHP leader organized the protest to bring these alarming incidents to the attention of the Indian authorities. He urged the government to take decisive measures to safeguard Hindus in Bangladesh and called for humanitarian assistance to allow marginalized Hindus from Chittagong to seek refuge in Tripura.
The rally commenced from the Agartala Town Hall and aimed to reach the Integrated Check Post at the Agartala-Akhaura border. However, police forces halted the march about a kilometer from the border, citing security issues. A brief confrontation occurred between the protesters and law enforcement, but the situation was quickly controlled without any reported injuries.
This protest marks the third demonstration in Agartala against the situation in Bangladesh within a few days. Previously, the youth wing of the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), allied with the ruling BJP, and activists from Sanatani Hindu Sena also protested near the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission, condemning the violence against minorities and recent controversial statements from Bangladeshi leaders regarding India's Northeast.
Various organizations and political factions in Tripura have condemned the alleged lynching of the Hindu man and criticized the interim Bangladeshi government for its inability to protect religious minorities. TMP’s Youth Tipra Federation President Suraj Debbarma noted that Bangladeshi leaders have been making provocative comments against India, including claims about territorial ambitions over India's Northeast.
