High-Level Talks Between India and the US
New Delhi: On Wednesday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged in discussions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Manila, focusing on critical areas such as trade, tariffs, energy, defense, essential minerals, and artificial intelligence.
According to the US State Department, both diplomats acknowledged the necessity of finalizing the interim trade agreement between India and the US, which is reportedly 'nearly complete.' They also touched upon the importance of concluding 'key defense agreements.'
Following their meeting, Rubio emphasized the significance of the US-India relationship, stating, 'Our relationship with India is vitally important.'
The two leaders also shared insights regarding the crisis in West Asia and the current situation in the Indo-Pacific region.
Jaishankar and Rubio were in the Philippine capital to partake in high-level discussions under the auspices of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Quad alliance.
Jaishankar later shared on social media that their discussions centered on priority areas for the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, including trade, tariffs, energy, defense, security, critical minerals, and artificial intelligence.
He added, 'We also exchanged quick perspectives on regional, global, and multilateral issues of mutual interest.'
Rubio reiterated that their talks encompassed trade, defense agreements, and regional security matters.
'We discussed regional security issues, the Quad, trade, and defense agreements,' he noted on X.
A brief statement from the US State Department indicated that Rubio and Jaishankar reviewed recent developments in the Middle East and the Indo-Pacific.
'The Secretary and Minister Jaishankar discussed finalizing key defense agreements in line with commitments made between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi last year,' it stated, although no specifics were provided.
'The Secretary and Minister Jaishankar agreed on the importance of finalizing the interim trade deal, which is almost complete,' it added.
This meeting between Jaishankar and Rubio occurred over a month after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump held discussions during the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France.
These talks signified efforts to mend the India-US relationship, which had faced significant challenges after the US imposed tariffs on India and Trump made contentious claims regarding his involvement in de-escalating military tensions between India and Pakistan last year.
In the following months, Trump publicly asserted that he had played a crucial role in resolving the military conflict, claiming it had averted a potential war.
New Delhi firmly maintained that the cessation of hostilities was a result of direct talks between India and Pakistan, asserting that US involvement was not a factor.
Additionally, the US's new immigration policy and increased H1B visa fees further strained relations between the two nations.
Despite these challenges, both sides have made concerted efforts in recent months to repair their ties and are moving towards solidifying a mutually beneficial trade agreement.
However, in June, relations faced new strains when three Indian sailors lost their lives due to US military actions against merchant vessels off the coast of Oman.
