TMC Leader Faces Hostility in Sonarpur

In Kolkata, TMC's national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, encountered a hostile crowd on Saturday during his visit to Sonarpur, where he aimed to meet families affected by post-election violence, according to police reports.

As he arrived, a group of unidentified individuals began throwing stones, shoes, and eggs at him, while chanting slogans accusing him of theft.

Footage from the scene depicted Banerjee being escorted away while wearing a helmet, with his shirt visibly torn amid the chaos.

Banerjee expressed his concerns, stating, "Look what they have done to me. This was pre-planned. There is no police presence here. They want to harm me. I will remain until the police provide protection for the victims' families."

Outside the residence of a TMC party worker, local women gathered, brandishing broomsticks and bamboo poles, voicing their discontent with Banerjee's presence.

They questioned his motives, with one woman stating, "Why is he here? The person he is visiting is also a thief. It’s like a thief visiting another thief."

Another protester challenged Banerjee, asking, "Where was he during the Nirbhaya incident? How often did he visit Nirbhaya's parents? We demand answers from him."

In response, BJP West Bengal president Samik Bhattacharya suggested that the incident reflected the frustration of locals who have faced years of hardship.

"The BJP is not involved in such actions. What transpired is unacceptable in a democracy," Bhattacharya remarked to the media.

"I cannot comment on the police's absence; that falls under administrative matters. Our party has endured significant mistreatment from the TMC over the years, which cannot be overlooked. We still remember the incidents involving Rupa Ganguly and our leaders in South 24 Parganas. The TMC remains in power because we have exercised restraint," he added.

A significant contingent of central forces, along with personnel from the Sonarpur police station, later arrived to stabilize the situation and ensure Banerjee's safe exit, as confirmed by a senior police official.
