What Does India's NSA Think About the New US-Iran Agreement?
India's Response to the US-Iran Memorandum
New Delhi: On Tuesday, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval expressed India's positive outlook regarding the memorandum of understanding (MoU) established between Iran and the United States. He conveyed hopes that this agreement would enhance both regional and global stability.
During his speech at the 16th BRICS National Security Advisors' Meeting, Doval stated, "India welcomes the MoU between the US and Iran. We are cautiously optimistic and believe it will be beneficial. This agreement is a significant step towards energy security."
He further noted that the MoU would help alleviate supply chain issues, addressing shortages in sectors such as fertilizers and chemicals.
Doval emphasized that improved freedom of navigation for countries in the region could significantly boost economic prosperity. He also reminded attendees to remain aware of emerging security threats and challenges.
On June 17, US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed the MoU remotely, which included a 60-day extension of the ceasefire to finalize the terms of a deal.
This agreement effectively concluded nearly four months of conflict between the US and Iran, initiating a 60-day negotiation period focused on Tehran's nuclear program and regional security matters.
India had previously welcomed the MoU, which aims to cease hostilities, stabilize the region, and restore trade relations.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reiterated that ongoing dialogue is crucial for achieving lasting peace in West Asia and ensuring unimpeded navigation and global trade through the Strait of Hormuz.
The MEA also highlighted India's consistent advocacy for de-escalation, dialogue, and diplomacy as vital components for resolving the ongoing conflict.
