A Historic Celebration in the Maldives
On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the Maldives' 60th Independence Day celebrations as the distinguished guest, marking a significant step forward in the relationship between the two nations after a period of tension.
He received a warm welcome from President Mohamed Muizzu and key members of his Cabinet at the Republic Square, the central location for the event in the Maldivian capital.
After the ceremony, which lasted over 50 minutes, Modi expressed India's unwavering commitment to the aspirations of the Maldivian populace.
He stated, "India and the Maldives share a profound partnership rooted in mutual respect, shared values, and a rich history of cultural and economic interactions."
Modi emphasized that the relationship is evolving, driven by strong people-to-people connections and collaboration across various sectors. He reiterated India's dedication to supporting the Maldivian people's aspirations and working together for global betterment.
During the event, Modi sat alongside Muizzu, enjoying a military parade and vibrant cultural performances by children and traditional artists.
He remarked, "It was a privilege to be part of the Maldives' 60th Independence Day celebrations. This significant event highlighted the rich cultural heritage and lively spirit of the Maldivian people."
Modi also noted the country's remarkable transformation over the years, from its ancient maritime traditions to its current role as a global leader in critical issues like climate change.
He extended his best wishes to the Maldivian people, acknowledging their journey.
The ceremony was attended by high-ranking political and military officials from the Maldives.
Several members of Modi's delegation, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, were present at the event.
Modi arrived in Male on Friday for a two-day visit, primarily to participate in the Independence Day festivities of the Indian Ocean nation.
His visit is viewed as a pivotal moment in restoring bilateral relations after a period of strain, particularly since Muizzu's rise to power in November 2023, which was influenced by an 'India Out' campaign.
Following discussions with Muizzu, Modi expressed pride in being the Maldives' "most trusted" ally, assuring that their friendship would remain strong.
In a demonstration of renewed ties, Modi announced a substantial line of credit worth Rs 4,850 crore for the Maldives and revealed that negotiations for a free trade agreement have commenced.
Additionally, New Delhi has decided to reduce the Maldives' annual debt repayment obligations by 40%, decreasing it from USD 51 million to USD 29 million, a significant gesture aimed at alleviating the country's economic challenges.
On Saturday, Modi also engaged with the Indian community in the Maldives, commending their role in strengthening the vibrant ties between the two nations.
