Judicial Adjudication of Voters in West Bengal

Kolkata: The initial supplementary list for the judicial review of voters categorized under 'logical discrepancy' is set to be released later today.

According to data from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, the judicial adjudication process has been finalized for 2,806,000 cases as of Sunday night. These cases will be included in the first supplementary list, categorized as either 'approved' or 'rejected.'

An official from the CEO's office revealed that approximately 34% of the adjudicated cases have been deemed excludable. However, voters whose names are excluded will have the opportunity to contest this decision at 19 designated Appellate Tribunals.

To recap, the final voters' list for West Bengal, excluding around 6 million names referred for judicial review, was published on February 28. Following a Supreme Court directive, supplementary lists will be issued periodically based on the progress of the adjudication process, with the first list being released today.

The supplementary list is expected to be distributed to district magistrates and election officers by this afternoon. Voters can access the additional list online via the Election Commission of India (ECI) website starting this evening. The list will also be available at polling booths, Block Development Offices (BDO), Sub-Divisional Offices (SDO), and District Magistrate offices.

In preparation for the release of the first supplementary list, the state police have implemented security measures as instructed by the ECI to mitigate any potential unrest or violence stemming from grievances.

A security meeting took place on Sunday at the CEO's office, where Manoj Kumar Agarwal, the CEO of West Bengal, convened with the Joint Force Deployment Committee to discuss the deployment of Central forces for the upcoming Assembly elections.

Insiders from the CEO's office indicated that strategies were developed regarding the number of personnel to be deployed and their operational procedures. The meeting included state police nodal officer Anand Kumar, special police observer N.K. Mishra, and central force nodal officers Shalav Mathur and Gaurav Sharma.

Meanwhile, senior officials from the ECI at their headquarters in New Delhi will conduct a high-level virtual meeting with district magistrates, police superintendents, and police commissioners this afternoon.

Voting for the West Bengal Assembly elections is scheduled for two phases on April 23 and April 29, covering 152 constituencies in the first phase and the remaining 142 in the second.
