Minister's Response to Kolkata Incident

In response to the alleged gang rape case in Kolkata, West Bengal Minister Shashi Panja stated that an immediate post-mortem and autopsy were conducted to ascertain the names and religions involved. He emphasized the need to condemn the incident rather than sensationalize it. The Trinamool Congress's student wing is not promoting such acts, he asserted. The police acted swiftly, apprehending three suspects within 12 hours of the complaint. These individuals are currently in custody as the investigation continues. Their mobile devices have been seized, and the victim's statement has been recorded, identifying the accused. This matter is being treated with utmost seriousness.

Police Action and Ongoing Investigation

The minister claimed that the BJP cannot fathom the prompt action taken by the Kolkata police. He criticized the opposition for attempting to tarnish the police's reputation. If the BJP wishes to act as a responsible opposition in Bengal, they must conduct themselves accordingly. Upon receiving the complaint, the police promptly arrested three suspects, who are now being interrogated. The victim's statement has also been documented.

Seriousness of the Incident

Panja highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating that the state government and West Bengal police do not remain passive during such serious incidents; instead, they respond swiftly. He expressed a desire to prevent such occurrences and insisted that politics should not interfere in these matters. The identities, religions, or affiliations of the accused are irrelevant, he noted, emphasizing that any connections to organizations do not change the seriousness of the crime.

Clarification on Allegations Against TMC

Addressing claims that one of the accused was a former leader of the TMC student union, Panja clarified that the student union elections have not taken place recently. The last committee formed in 2022 did not include any of the accused. Therefore, there is no connection to the TMC. Regarding the accused being photographed with various TMC leaders, he explained that many individuals often take pictures with prominent figures.
