West Bengal Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Immigration Amid New Welfare Initiatives
Political and Administrative Actions Against Illegal Immigration
In West Bengal, the political landscape surrounding Bangladeshi infiltrators has become increasingly pronounced, with the state government adopting a more aggressive stance against illegal immigration. Alongside this, efforts to enhance public welfare programs and administrative reforms have been ramped up to strengthen the government's connection with the populace. During administrative meetings and public events on Tuesday, Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari made it clear that there would be no leniency regarding law enforcement and border security in the state.
Chief Minister's Strong Statements on Illegal Immigration
Following an administrative meeting with officials from Nadia, Hooghly, and North 24 Parganas districts in Kalyani, Chief Minister Adhikari asserted that a significant number of illegal Bangladeshi nationals had gathered at the Hakimpur check post in the Basirhat sub-division of North 24 Parganas, and many were willing to return to Bangladesh. He issued a stern warning, stating, 'Leave quickly, or the government will take necessary actions.' This statement has stirred considerable political activity within the state.
Government's Shift in Focus on Immigration Policies
The Chief Minister emphasized that the state would no longer allocate public funds to those residing illegally. He criticized the previous misuse of laws due to vote bank politics, which overlooked the issue of infiltration. He firmly stated that the interests of the country and state would now take precedence over vote bank considerations, asserting that illegal immigration directly undermines the rights of West Bengal's native residents and Indian citizens.
Implementation of 'Identify, Remove, and Deport' Policy
In line with this approach, the state government has begun to swiftly implement the 'Identify, Remove, and Deport' policy. Under this initiative, centers are being established in each district to temporarily house apprehended foreign nationals and released foreign prisoners until their deportation processes are completed. Malda has become the first district to set up a special holding center at Chandan Park in the English Bazaar, currently housing nine suspected Bangladeshi nationals, including women and children, under strict security.
Legal Procedures for Detained Foreign Nationals
According to officials, these centers aim to detain foreign nationals caught for illegal entry or lacking valid documents until investigations and legal proceedings are finalized. The Chief Minister previously announced that infiltrators not covered under the Citizenship Amendment Act would be directly handed over to the Border Security Force by the state police to avoid lengthy legal delays.
Central Government's Concerns on Illegal Immigration
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has expressed serious concerns regarding illegal immigration and unusual demographic changes in the country. He announced the formation of a high-level committee to study the impact of illegal immigration on population balance. Shah noted that the unusual demographic shifts caused by infiltration could pose significant challenges for any nation’s present and future, indicating that both central and state governments are viewing this issue through the lens of national security.
New Welfare Schemes Announced by the Chief Minister
On another note, Chief Minister Adhikari also unveiled several new welfare initiatives for the state. He announced that 400 special canteens would provide meals of fish and rice for just five rupees. Additionally, application forms for the Annapurna scheme will be released on May 27, offering eligible women monthly financial assistance of three thousand rupees.
Social Reforms and Administrative Coordination
The Chief Minister also made significant announcements regarding social reforms, stating that liquor shops would not be permitted within a one-kilometer radius of schools, colleges, and temples, marking a crucial step towards improving the social environment. Regarding administrative meetings, he noted that the state is now implementing 'the rule of law, not the rule of the ruler.' Continuous administrative coordination meetings are being held in Durgapur, Kalyani, and other areas to enhance collaboration between legislators and the administration. Similar meetings are planned for Malda and Kolaghat in the coming days. The Chief Minister emphasized that his government aims to convey the party's 'Nation First' perspective and developmental vision to the administration, steering governance in a new direction.
