On Monday, Suvendu Adhikari, a prominent leader in West Bengal, addressed the controversy surrounding the suspension of entry passes for collective prayers at a mosque located within Kolkata Airport. He emphasized that national security is of utmost importance, stating that the gates of installations with geopolitical significance cannot remain open to outsiders. Adhikari asserted that the safety of the nation and the airport will take precedence over all other considerations. As the Chief Minister, he refrained from making further comments on the matter. The strategic location of Kolkata International Airport, situated near both China and Bangladesh, necessitates strict access control.
Chief Minister's Response to Religious Practices
The Chief Minister clarified that their administration does not impose restrictions on religious practices, dismissing allegations from the opposition. He stated that no one has been prevented from practicing their faith, contrary to claims made by the opposition. The festival of Bakrid was celebrated in accordance with animal sacrifice laws, and Muharram was observed without any weapons, resulting in no issues. He urged citizens to adhere to the law and practice their religion privately without attempting to influence others, ensuring a harmonious environment.

This statement follows the state government's decision on Saturday to shift the Bankura mosque for security reasons. Airport officials announced that prayers at the Gauripur Jama Masjid (also known as Bankura Mosque) within Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport would be suspended for three days starting Saturday for maintenance work. This mosque is believed to be over 130 years old and predates the airport, located approximately 165 meters from the secondary runway.
