Public Holiday Announcement for Eid al-Adha
The West Bengal government has officially announced a public holiday on May 28, 2026, to celebrate Eid al-Adha (Bakrid), as per a notification released on Saturday. This announcement modifies the previous holiday schedule, resulting in the cancellation of the public holidays originally set for May 26 and 27, which will now be regular working days for all offices, institutions, and establishments covered by this notification.
According to the order, "As per notification number 4188-F(P2) dated November 27, 2025, public holidays were declared for May 26, 2026 (Tuesday) and May 27, 2026 (Wednesday) in observance of Eid-ul-Zuha (Bakrid). It has now been confirmed that Eid-ul-Zuha will be celebrated on May 28, 2026 (Thursday). Therefore, the Governor has declared a public holiday on May 28, 2026, under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, amending the previous notification accordingly."
The order further states that as a result of this change, the previously notified holidays on May 26 and 27, 2026, are now canceled. Consequently, these dates will be working days for all offices, institutions, and establishments affected by the notification.
Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. The festival is celebrated through prayers, charitable acts, and the ritual sacrifice of animals, emphasizing sharing and compassion.
