This article explores the implications of the visit and the ongoing political dynamics in Murshidabad.

Chief Minister's First Visit to Murshidabad

Due to heavy rainfall, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, had to cancel his scheduled flight to Murshidabad and opted for road travel instead on Friday. This marks his inaugural visit to Murshidabad since taking office. Adhikari is set to participate in an organizational meeting of the BJP at a hotel in Baharampur, followed by an administrative review meeting at Rabindra Sadan. Later in the day, he will address a party gathering in Rejinagar. This visit holds significant political importance following recent comments made by Humayun Kabir, the founder of the Ujjain Party (AJUP) and MLA from Nauda.

West Bengal has experienced heavy monsoon rains, with Cooch Behar recording the highest rainfall in the state at 143 mm over the 24 hours that ended Friday morning. Officials reported that the adverse weather conditions made air travel unsafe, prompting changes to the Chief Minister's travel plans.

Adhikari mentioned, 'We had planned for the opposition leader to travel by air. However, due to the persistent rain and current weather conditions, air travel was not feasible. After assessing the situation, it was decided that we would travel by road. All necessary security and logistical arrangements were made for this.' The event in Rejinagar has garnered political attention as it is considered a stronghold of Humayun Kabir, who has recently been embroiled in controversy due to alleged inflammatory statements. During the assembly session, Adhikari accused Kabir of attempting to distribute votes ahead of the by-elections. These by-elections are expected to occur after the AJUP leader vacates the Rejinagar seat, which his son is likely to contest.

However, Kabir contended that his remarks were not directed against the state government but were aimed at those who joined the BJP in Murshidabad after the assembly elections and allegedly threatened him. Adhikari also informed the assembly that two criminal cases have been filed against Kabir at the Shaktipur and Rejinagar police stations, intensifying speculation about the MLA's potential arrest. Following this, he announced plans to visit Murshidabad within a week.
