West Bengal CM Orders Fresh Investigation into Doctor's Murder Case

New Inquiry Announced in Doctor's Murder Case

On August 9, Kolkata's Chief Minister, Shubhendu Adhikari, announced a renewed investigation into the 2024 case involving the rape and murder of a female doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. This tragic incident had shocked the nation. The decision to reopen the case was made following a request from the victim's mother, who is now a legislator with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Adhikari stated, “Ratna Debnath wrote to me requesting a fresh inquiry into the case. After extensive discussions with the Chief Secretary and a team of experts, I am declaring a new investigation under the Special Commission Act of 1952.” He criticized the police for failing to fulfill their duties in this matter. Additionally, he ordered a separate investigation into the alleged negligence during the victim's funeral and instructed the Barrackpore Police Commissioner to file a First Information Report (FIR).

The Chief Minister claimed that the victim's body was initially third in line for cremation at the Natagarh Kadamtala crematorium but was suddenly moved to the front and cremated hastily. He also alleged that the family did not receive the funeral fee that had been agreed upon, and no mandatory signatures from close relatives were obtained. Adhikari accused Nirmal Ghosh, Somnath Dey, and Sanjeeb Mukherjee of orchestrating this.

While addressing a condolence meeting held in memory of the victim in Panihati, the Chief Minister assured that the state police would independently investigate the allegations related to the funeral, as this case does not fall under the jurisdiction of the ongoing Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry.
