On Saturday, the Chief Minister of West Bengal launched a strong critique against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, asserting that the ongoing activities under this initiative pose a serious threat to the dignity, livelihoods, and constitutional rights of ordinary citizens. He emphasized that this process has transformed into a tool for intimidation and exclusion.

Letter to Chief Election Commissioner

In a letter addressed to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the Chief Minister expressed his alarm regarding the notice received by economist Amartya Sen concerning the SIR. He indicated that this incident has laid bare the institutional arrogance at play. He raised concerns about the challenges faced by the common populace, including the poor, migrant workers, daily wage laborers, and women, if even prominent figures like Sen are not spared.

Consequences of the Revision Process

The Chief Minister criticized the hearings as being mechanical, lacking empathy, and devoid of sensitivity to human realities. He pointed out the devastating outcomes associated with this unplanned and coercive process, which have resulted in 77 deaths, suicide attempts, and hospitalizations linked to fear, anxiety, and distress.

Critique of the Election Commission

Attacking the Election Commission of India (ECI), Banerjee stated that the apex electoral body is dangerously deviating from its constitutional responsibilities. He asserted that democracy cannot be sustained through fear and added that voter lists cannot be forcibly sanitized.

Hope for Restoration of Democratic Values

Expressing hope for the restoration of democracy's 'sanctity,' he remarked that constitutional authorities do not earn respect by behaving like tyrants. He has formally presented these concerns to the Election Commission, stating that there is still time for reform. He remains hopeful that sensible actions will be taken to alleviate the suffering of citizens.
