Silchar, April 9: Polling day in Assam's Cachar district witnessed a steady influx of voters, particularly among the youth, who expressed strong desires for job opportunities, enhanced infrastructure, and improved civic amenities.

By 11 am, the voter turnout in the district reached 18.08%.

At the Adhar Chand Higher Secondary School polling station in Silchar, voters from various backgrounds shared their personal stories, civic issues, and aspirations for development after casting their votes.

First-time voter Uddipan Bhattacharjee articulated the hopes of the younger generation, describing his voting experience as both anxiety-inducing and rewarding.

“Initially, I felt nervous, but after voting, I am relieved and proud. Our generation expects significant development, including more facilities, job opportunities, industries, and improved infrastructure,” he remarked, highlighting that Silchar still trails behind larger cities in growth.

Many voters pointed out urgent civic challenges such as traffic congestion, inadequate road conditions, and waterlogging.

The district administration implemented measures to facilitate smooth polling, including separate lines for men and women and wheelchair assistance for elderly and differently-abled voters. Officials anticipate that turnout numbers will increase as the day continues.

However, minor issues arose at a polling center in Tarapur, where voters who arrived as early as 6 am faced delays when polling commenced at 7 am. An EVM malfunction at one booth caused a brief setback, which officials quickly addressed.

One voter expressed frustration over these technical issues despite the prior training of polling staff and noted the lack of a proper exit route, which contributed to congestion inside the booth.

Meanwhile, Lakhipur MLA and Minister Kaushik Rai cast his vote with his family and encouraged citizens to engage actively in what he referred to as the “festival of democracy.”

“The enthusiasm among voters throughout the constituency and the state is very encouraging. People are coming out in large numbers to participate in the democratic process,” he stated.

In Sonai, Congress candidate Aminul Haque Laskar expressed his contentment with the peaceful polling and enthusiastic turnout. “I feel great after voting with my family. I appreciate everyone who came out today to support democracy,” he said.

Laskar described the overall environment as calm and orderly, noting that voters were participating freely without any pressure.

He expressed hope that this peaceful trend would persist throughout the day, adding, “Ultimately, the results will reveal the winner, but what matters most is that people can vote freely and fairly.”
