Viral Video Sparks Action for Abandoned Children in Himachal Pradesh
Heartbreaking Situation of Abandoned Siblings
In a distressing scene, four abandoned children were found huddled in a makeshift hut, battling the cold as icy winds blew through a damaged roof. Their plight came to light only after a video showcasing their suffering went viral on social media, prompting immediate action from local authorities.
The tragic circumstances surrounding these siblings from Matwar village in Himachal Pradesh's Chamba district highlight a systemic failure to address their needs over the years.
Mother's Departure Leaves Children Vulnerable
Following the death of their father, the children's mother remarried and left them to fend for themselves. Without any adult supervision, the four siblings faced severe hardships, lacking food, warm clothing, and a stable home. During the harsh winter months, they endured freezing nights in a rudimentary shelter, struggling for survival.
Despite their desperate situation, the local community, panchayat, and relevant government agencies failed to intervene until a concerned individual recorded their living conditions and shared the footage online.
Government Response After Public Outcry
The viral video prompted members of the District Child Welfare Committee to visit the children and evaluate their circumstances. They were subsequently placed under the Sukhashray Yojana, which guarantees them safety, nourishment, education, and proper oversight.
Chaman Sharma, the panchayat secretary, noted that a house had been approved in the name of the children's father prior to his passing. However, due to the children's minor status at that time, construction could not proceed, leaving them without a permanent home.
The Family's Background
The children, Nisha Devi (17), Santosh Kumar (15), Meena Devi (11), and Arjun (8), were left orphaned after their father, Jagir Singh, passed away. Following his death, their mother abandoned them, leaving the siblings to navigate life alone.
