Violent Protests Erupt Among Factory Workers in Noida, Uttar Pradesh
Protests Turn Violent in Noida's Industrial Area
In Noida's industrial sector, a protest by factory workers escalated into violence today, creating a tense atmosphere throughout the region. The unrest, which has been ongoing for several days, intensified when a large group of workers began vandalizing vehicles and throwing stones at the police. Reports indicate that workers from various factories in the Face-2 area took to the streets demanding higher wages and improved working conditions. During the demonstration, some aggressive individuals overturned a police vehicle and caused damage to several others. Eyewitnesses noted that the situation worsened when protesters started throwing stones and set one vehicle on fire.
Ongoing Unrest Challenges Law Enforcement
This protest marks the fourth consecutive day of unrest, posing a significant challenge for local authorities in maintaining law and order. The large gathering of workers and their aggressive demeanor have made the situation appear uncontrollable. Consequently, major roads have been severely affected, leading to significant traffic jams that commuters faced during their morning travels.
Police Deployment and Appeals for Calm
To manage the situation, authorities have deployed a substantial police presence at the scene. Senior officials are on-site monitoring developments. The police have stated that they are attempting to handle the situation with minimal force and are urging workers to remain calm while also advising the public to disregard rumors. A police officer reported that protests began early in the day across various sectors, including Sector 63, Sector 62, and the industrial areas of Face-2, Surajpur, Knowledge Park, Dadri, and Ecotech-1. He mentioned that workers blocked roads in several locations, leading to confrontations with the police. Reports also indicated that some workers violently attacked police vehicles and set fire to cars, prompting the police to disperse the crowd using force and tear gas.
Efforts to Resolve the Situation
Additional Police Commissioner (Law and Order) Rajiv Narayan Mishra stated that the police are closely monitoring the situation. He mentioned that efforts are being made to communicate with the workers. Some of the workers' demands have been acknowledged by local industrialists, and they are being urged to end the protests peacefully. According to Mishra, the workers are protesting in various locations without a clear leader, complicating communication between them and the administration.
Government Response to Workers' Demands
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath responded to the situation, emphasizing that workers deserve their rightful entitlements, including fair wages and a safe working environment. He instructed industrial units to adhere to labor laws and address workers' issues. However, he also made it clear that strict action would be taken against those inciting chaos under the guise of workers' rights.
Background of the Protests
The backdrop of this movement is linked to a recent minimum wage increase announced by the Haryana government. In Haryana, the minimum wage for unskilled workers was raised by approximately thirty-five percent, from ₹11,274 to ₹15,220 per month. Following this, workers in Noida are demanding equal pay for equal work and are also calling for an increase in the minimum wage in Uttar Pradesh.
Workers' Grievances
Workers have expressed that not only are they receiving low wages, but there are also inadequate safety measures at their workplaces. Additionally, they are frustrated by the lack of weekly holidays, absence of grievance redressal mechanisms, and other basic facilities.
Allegations of External Influence
On the other hand, Lalit Thukral, an official from an industrial organization, alleged that the protests are being orchestrated by external elements inciting the workers. He claimed that most of the workers' demands have already been met, yet they refuse to return to work.
Appeal for Peace from District Administration
District Magistrate Mehta Rupam has appealed to the workers to maintain peace. She stated that after several meetings with industrial units, the administration has made significant decisions in favor of the workers. These include doubling overtime pay, ensuring weekly holidays for every worker, providing double wages for Sunday work, and guaranteeing timely salary payments. Furthermore, directives have been issued to establish internal grievance committees in all factories, install complaint boxes at every workplace, and provide salary slips. The administration has assured strict enforcement of these regulations and regular monitoring.
Establishment of a Control Room for Workers
Additionally, to expedite the resolution of workers' issues, the district administration has set up a 24-hour control room where workers can register complaints and seek assistance. Officials believe this will enhance communication between workers and the administration, facilitating quicker resolutions to problems. While the situation remains tense, both the administration and the government are actively working towards a peaceful resolution.
