Arson and Vandalism Reported Across West Bengal

On Monday, reports emerged of arson and vandalism targeting Trinamool Congress (TMC) offices throughout West Bengal as BJP supporters celebrated their significant electoral victory.

According to police reports, TMC offices in various locations, including Tollygunge and Kasba in Kolkata, as well as Baruipur, Kamarhati, Baranagar, Howrah, and Baharampur, were attacked by mobs starting in the afternoon.

An official from the Election Commission stated that strict measures would be enforced against those responsible for the violence, and local police have been instructed to provide reports for further action.

BJP leader Rahul Sinha denied any involvement from his party members, suggesting that the unrest might stem from internal conflicts within the TMC as they expressed dissatisfaction with their leadership following the election results.

In Tollygunge's Bijoygarh-Netajjnagar area, a mob was seen vandalizing the election office of TMC candidate and former minister Aroop Biswas, with some individuals kicking the damaged hoarding before departing.

At Ruby Crossing, a crowd brandishing BJP flags stormed the office of TMC councillor Sushanta Ghosh.

The TMC condemned these acts, taking to social media to assert, "The BJP has revealed its true nature immediately after assuming power."

"Their thugs launched a violent assault on our office in Murshidabad. This vandalism and disorder exemplify the BJP's descent into gutter politics," they stated.

The party also claimed that their candidate in Udaynarayanpur, Samir Panja, was attacked, describing it as a brutal demonstration of the BJP's violent tendencies. "This is not democracy; it is outright thuggery," they added.

Shreya Pande, a TMC candidate from Maniktala in north Kolkata, shared a video on social media showing a middle-aged party leader covered in blood, alleging he was assaulted by BJP supporters post-vote counting.

Pande lost to BJP's Tapas Roy by a margin of 15,644 votes.

The TMC also shared a video that allegedly depicted their office in Siliguri being set on fire, though the authenticity of the footage could not be independently verified.

In the Panihati Assembly constituency, where Ratna Debnath, the mother of a rape-murder victim, defeated TMC's Tirthankar Ghosh by 28,836 votes, a TMC office changed ownership overnight.

TMC candidates Trinankur Bhattacharya and Rajb Chakraborty were reportedly assaulted while leaving counting centers and required protection from CAPF personnel.

While BJP's Rahul Sinha condemned the violence, he noted that it could not compare to the situation in 2021 when TMC supporters attacked BJP offices and set several ablaze without police intervention.

"This time, however, law enforcement and central security forces are responding swiftly," he remarked.
