Clashes in Unakoti District

In Tripura's Unakoti district, ten individuals were detained following communal clashes that erupted on Saturday during a donation collection for a local temple, as reported by police on Sunday.

According to Superintendent of Police Avinash Kumar Rai, the altercations resulted in injuries to four police officers and six civilians.

Rai stated, "Prohibitory orders under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita are still in effect in the region." He added that internet services remain suspended.

To maintain order, paramilitary forces are conducting foot patrols in sensitive areas, and no new incidents of violence have been reported, the police confirmed.

The unrest began when members of a local club halted a truck allegedly carrying smuggled timber and demanded money from the driver under the pretext of a festival, leading to a confrontation when the driver refused to comply, as detailed by a news source.

The clashes sparked a political controversy, with Jitendra Chaudhury, the Leader of the Opposition from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party of neglecting the safety of minority community members.

Chaudhury remarked, "While Kumarghat was in turmoil, the chief minister was preoccupied with a roadshow in Kanchanpur, North Tripura," highlighting the lack of a statement from the chief minister regarding the violence.

In response, Rajib Bhattacharjee, the state BJP president, condemned the violence and commended the police for their swift action against those involved.
