Agartala, Nov 3: Authorities have detained at least six individuals following an incident in which three Border Security Force (BSF) members sustained injuries due to an attack by local villagers in the Sepahijala district of Tripura. Chief Minister Manik Saha has condemned the violence and instructed law enforcement to act promptly.
Details of the Attack
The altercation took place at Ashabari, under the jurisdiction of the Kalamchoura police station, on Monday. This incident was reportedly fueled by claims that a local youth had been mistreated while in BSF custody.
A police spokesperson confirmed that six villagers were arrested, with additional individuals taken to the Kalamchoura Police Station for their suspected roles in the incident.
Government Response
Chief Minister Saha expressed his strong disapproval of the attack, stating that violence against security forces is intolerable and must be met with decisive action. He emphasized the need for respect and protection for security personnel, urging authorities to ensure justice is served.
“I firmly condemn the brutal assault on our courageous BSF personnel at Ashabari by a group of miscreants. Such acts of violence against our security forces are completely unacceptable and deserve unequivocal condemnation,” Saha stated on social media.
Injuries and Aftermath
The injured BSF members have been identified as Company Commander Rohit, driver Sunil Kumar, and Manjit. They were en route in a BSF vehicle from Rahimpur to Boxanagar when they encountered protesters near Natun Bazar.
The vehicle, registered as TR-01-AL-1051, was reportedly attacked with sticks and bamboo by the crowd, resulting in injuries to several villagers as well.
Underlying Tensions
The confrontation appears to have originated from allegations that BSF personnel had detained and assaulted local resident Hefzur Rahman during a vegetation-clearing operation near Ashabari Gram Panchayat. Villagers claimed that Rahman was taken into custody around 10 am and was subsequently assaulted, leading to a fracture in his leg.
In response to the alleged assault, villagers blocked the Ashabari-Rahimpur road near Natun Bazar, demanding accountability for the BSF personnel involved. The BSF vehicle then encountered the protesters, escalating the situation.
Ongoing Investigations
Both parties have reportedly filed complaints at the Kalamchoura police station regarding the incident. Senior officials from the BSF have visited the area to assess the situation, and an investigation is currently underway.
