Violence Erupts in Manipur: Two Villagers Killed in Attack

Imphal, Aug 31: In a shocking incident, two villagers lost their lives and two others, including a woman, were injured by gunfire when armed attackers reportedly targeted N Teikhang Kuki village in the Kangpokpi district of Manipur on Monday morning.

The assault occurred around 9:30 AM in the T Waichong subdivision along the IT Road corridor, where assailants allegedly opened fire on the villagers and set multiple homes ablaze, according to local sources.

The victims have been identified as Lamtinthang and Neichin, the wife of Tongpao. The injured individuals, Seilun and Nemneichong, suffered bullet wounds, with Seilun hit in the thigh and Nemneichong also sustaining injuries.

Reports indicate that Lamtinthang was the son of Seilun. The attack resulted in several homes being torched, prompting residents to flee amidst the chaos and gunfire.

According to Kuki villagers, the attackers are believed to be affiliated with the NSCN-IM and ZUF-K groups.

This claim has not been independently verified, as there has been no immediate official confirmation regarding the identities of those responsible.

This incident adds to the ongoing violence along the IT Road corridor, following a series of deadly events in the region that have heightened concerns about escalating tensions.

On August 27, Kuki organizations reported that armed members of the NSCN-IM and ZUF(K) attacked unarmed Kuki farmers near Wakotphai, close to Naibet, in the Twilang area.

These farmers were reportedly residing in temporary shelters near their paddy fields when the assault occurred. This allegation also remains unverified.

On the same day, an armed ambush on the IT Road between Makui Ashang and Thanamba Naga resulted in the deaths of at least four Naga civilians, with one injured and another reported missing.

The missing individual, Wisobou Charenamai, who served as the chairman of the Chawangkining Village Authority, was later confirmed dead, raising the death toll from the ambush to five.

Naga organizations have since alleged that Kuki armed groups were involved in this ambush, although the identities of those responsible had not been officially confirmed at the time of the initial reports.

The attack on Monday is being interpreted locally in light of the violence from August 27, although no official agency has established a direct connection between the two incidents or confirmed if the latest attack was an act of retaliation.
