Imphal, April 7: Violence has erupted anew in Manipur following the tragic deaths of two children in a suspected rocket launcher attack in Bishnupur district early Tuesday morning, leading to widespread anger and unrest.
The incident took place around 1 am at Tronglaobi Awang Leikai, under the jurisdiction of Moirang Police Station, when a projectile, believed to have been fired by Kuki militants, hit a residential area. This explosion resulted in the heartbreaking deaths of a 5-year-old boy and a 5-month-old baby girl.
Their mother suffered severe injuries from the blast and was quickly transported to Raj Medicity Hospital. Medical staff confirmed that both children were pronounced dead upon arrival, while the mother remains in critical condition.
The attack incited immediate protests in Moirang, with furious locals taking to the streets to denounce the violence. Tensions escalated as demonstrators engaged in arson, setting fire to two oil tankers and a truck loaded with goods that were reportedly heading to Churachandpur.
In a further escalation, a large crowd surrounded the Moirang Police Station, demanding immediate and effective action against those responsible for the attack. Protesters burned tyres and debris outside the police station, heightening the already tense situation.
In response, security forces have been deployed in significant numbers to the area to restore order and prevent further violence. Officials report that the situation remains tense and is under close observation.
Moirang MLA Thokchom Santi Singh, who arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, condemned the killings, labeling the act as “nothing less than terrorism.” He extended his heartfelt condolences to the grieving family and called for strict action against the perpetrators.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the identity of those responsible, and further updates are anticipated as investigations progress.
