Violence Erupts in Himachal Pradesh Prisons: Multiple Injuries Reported

Violence erupted in two prisons in Himachal Pradesh, resulting in injuries to inmates and staff. The incidents, occurring within a day, have raised serious concerns about prison management and security protocols. Investigations are underway to determine the causes and circumstances surrounding these clashes, which follow previous scrutiny of the Dharamshala facility after a suspicious death of an undertrial prisoner. As authorities respond to these alarming events, questions about the safety and handling of disputes in the state's correctional facilities are becoming increasingly urgent.

Violent Clashes in Himachal Pradesh Prisons

Recent incidents of violence have put the prison system in Himachal Pradesh under the spotlight, following clashes at two separate jails in the state. The disturbances occurred at the Nahan and Dharamshala facilities within a single day, resulting in injuries to both inmates and prison staff.

The first clash took place at the Central Jail in Nahan, located in the Sirmaur district, where a confrontation erupted among two groups of undertrial prisoners late Saturday night. The altercation began in the 'A' Block and quickly escalated, involving a significant number of inmates.

Despite the prompt response from jail staff, they struggled to regain control of the situation. Additional personnel were summoned and, after considerable effort, managed to quell the unrest.

While several inmates were reported injured, officials have yet to confirm the total number of casualties or the cause of the conflict.

Following a complaint from Jail Deputy Superintendent Sita Ram, local police have initiated an investigation into the incident. Sirmaur's Superintendent of Police, NS Negi, stated that they are currently looking into the events that led to the clash.

In a separate incident at the Lala Lajpat Rai District Open and Correctional Home in Dharamshala, tensions flared on Sunday afternoon over the arrangements for transporting an inmate to a hospital. What started as a disagreement regarding guard deployment escalated into a physical altercation, injuring four inmates and four jail security personnel.

The injured staff members have been identified as Head Constable Rakesh Verma, Suraj, Ajit, and Shivram, all of whom were taken to Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College at Tanda for medical attention.

The situation intensified when a glass window was shattered, with pieces of glass reportedly used during the confrontation, leading to injuries on both sides.

Dharamshala Police arrived at the scene after being notified and have filed cross-FIRs. Investigators are now looking into the details surrounding the incident and the involvement of those present.

This recent violence adds to the ongoing concerns regarding the Dharamshala facility, which had previously faced scrutiny following the suspicious death of an undertrial prisoner nearly two months ago. This incident raised significant questions about the operational standards and security measures in place at the jail.

With two violent occurrences reported from major correctional facilities in Himachal Pradesh, there are likely to be increased inquiries into inmate management, security protocols, and the resolution of disputes within the state's prisons.
