Violence Erupts in Assam's Karbi Anglong, Two Dead and Many Injured
Violence Breaks Out in Karbi Anglong
Diphu/Guwahati, Dec 25: Recent clashes in Assam's Karbi Anglong district have resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to over 45 others, including 38 police officers. The unrest was triggered by a confrontation between two groups of protesters, leading security forces to resort to lathicharge and tear gas to disperse the crowds, according to officials.
The deceased include a 25-year-old specially abled man, Suresh Dey, whose body was found in a building set ablaze by protesters. Another victim, Athik Timung, was killed during the altercation, as reported by law enforcement.
Protesters are advocating for the removal of encroachers from tribal lands.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his sorrow over the fatalities, stating, ''I am closely monitoring the situation in West Karbi Anglong. It is deeply painful that two persons lost their lives during today’s unrest,'' in a message shared on social media.
To ensure peace, additional security forces will be deployed in the Kherani area on Wednesday, he added.
''We are in constant communication with all parties involved to restore normalcy and resolve issues through dialogue. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. The government will support all affected families and provide necessary assistance,'' Sarma stated.
Director General of Police Harmeet Singh mentioned that he had discussions with the protesters, who assured they would refrain from violence.
However, he noted that incidents of bomb-throwing, arrow shooting, and shop burnings occurred, resulting in injuries to 38 police personnel, including IPS officers. Singh himself was injured by a stone during the chaos.
He cautioned that law enforcement would take strict measures if the protesters continued to break the law.
The DGP also urged community members to guide the ''misguided youth'' towards peaceful resolutions, emphasizing that violence is not a solution. The Chief Minister has indicated a willingness to engage in discussions to address their concerns.
Despite prohibitory measures, a significant number of individuals, including women and children whose businesses were destroyed, participated in protests against the violence. Meanwhile, those demanding the eviction of encroachers gathered in the Kheroni market area.
Efforts by security forces to calm the situation were met with stone pelting from both sides, resulting in injuries to several protesters, police officers, and journalists, according to a senior official.
As tensions escalated, police resorted to lathicharge and tear gas to disperse the conflicting groups.
Earlier, protesters had set fire to two motorcycles in the Kheroni area.
In response to the unrest, internet services in both Karbi Anglong and West Anglong districts were temporarily suspended on Tuesday to maintain peace and prevent further escalation.
