Violence Erupts During Meira Rallies in Imphal: Police Response Intensifies

In Imphal, recent Meira rallies have seen a troubling shift as anti-social elements infiltrate protests, leading to violent confrontations. The local police, while maintaining restraint to avoid casualties, are now intensifying their response to these provocations. Dangerous weapons, including petrol bombs and slingshots, have been reported in use, with some participants under the influence of substances. Authorities are committed to taking strict legal action against both the violent individuals and those inciting unrest. This situation raises significant concerns about public safety and law enforcement's role in managing civil disturbances.

Changing Dynamics of Meira Rallies

According to K. Shivakanta Singh, the Superintendent of Police for Imphal West, the nature of the Meira rallies occurring in various parts of the city has shifted recently. Elements posing as protesters have infiltrated these gatherings, leading to violent incidents. These individuals are not only targeting security forces but are also attempting to disrupt public order.

Use of Dangerous Weapons

The Superintendent revealed that dangerous weapons are being utilized during these rallies. This includes throwing petrol bombs, using slingshots with iron projectiles, and hurling large stones at security personnel. Additionally, many participants have been found under the influence of alcohol or other narcotics. The police have reported that some instigators are actively distributing petrol, kerosene bombs, and slingshots to the crowd before it gathers.

Police's Firm Action

Despite these provocations, law enforcement has exercised maximum restraint to prevent significant loss of life. However, relevant agencies are now fully engaged and fulfilling their legal responsibilities. Superintendent K. Shivakanta Singh has warned that strict legal action will be taken against those involved in the violence, as well as against individuals inciting such acts.
