Clash Among Congress Members in Morigaon

Morigaon, Jan 12: A violent altercation among Congress party members in Morigaon has cast a shadow over an upcoming joining event set for Monday, which is expected to be attended by Gaurav Gogoi, the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC). The district unit's administrative general secretary has filed a police report following an alleged assault.

The clash took place late Sunday night at the Morigaon School playground, where preparations for the Congress event were in progress.

Ejaz Hussain, the administrative general secretary for the Morigaon district Congress, suffered significant injuries during the incident and is currently receiving treatment at Morigaon Civil Hospital.

In his report to the Morigaon Sadar Police Station, Hussain accused Lahorighat MLA Dr. Mohammad Asif Najar of orchestrating the attack, claiming it occurred under the MLA's direct orders and in his presence.

The FIR indicates that tensions escalated over the display of banners and posters for Dr. Faridul Hussain, a Congress candidate vying for the Lahorighat Assembly seat.

According to the complaint, the sitting MLA was reportedly angered by the banners and allegedly directed party members to remove them.

Hussain stated that when he attempted to prevent the destruction of the posters, he was assaulted by a group of Congress workers led by a youth named Akshay Bordoloi.

He reported being struck with bamboo sticks, resulting in a fractured leg and injuries that required stitches.

“I was overseeing the preparations for today’s event last night. There are several aspirants from each constituency, and everyone had displayed their banners. The Lahorighat MLA arrived and instructed the youth to tear down Dr. Faridul Hussain’s posters. When I objected, he allegedly ordered his supporters to attack me,” Hussain explained.

He mentioned that he has lodged an FIR and intends to formally inform APCC president Gogoi about the incident.

This violence follows a previous occurrence at the same location, where Dr. Hussain's banners were reportedly destroyed under the cover of darkness, leading to discontent among his supporters.

Supporters of the candidate contend that the actions stem from anxiety over his rising popularity as the Assembly elections approach.

They assert that approximately 80% of voters in the Lahorighat constituency support the Congress's decision to nominate Dr. Hussain.

“What does tearing down posters signify? Dr. Hussain has gained the trust of people from various backgrounds in Lahorighat. This tactic will not deter him. Posters featuring Gaurav Gogoi and Pradyut Bordoloi were also destroyed, which only reflects insecurity,” remarked a Congress member.

Another party member condemned the incident, warning that such internal disputes could tarnish the Congress's reputation at a crucial juncture. He called on district leadership to take decisive action against those responsible.

Police officials have confirmed that the situation is under investigation. As of the time of this report, there has been no official comment from the party leadership or the MLA mentioned in the FIR.
