Imphal, May 29: A truck driver lost his life and a police officer was injured during a suspected militant attack along National Highway-202 (NH-202) in the Ukhrul district of Manipur on Friday.

Details of the Attack

The violent episode took place close to TM Kasom, approximately six kilometers from Shangkhai Kuki Village, where security forces were actively working to clear road blockages and ensure the flow of essential goods to Ukhrul town.

Sources indicate that security personnel had been engaged throughout the morning in efforts to disperse protesters and secure the highway. During these operations, forces reportedly deployed tear gas and mock bombs to eliminate obstacles and restore normal traffic.

Casualties and Response

In the midst of rising tensions, suspected militants opened fire near TM Kasom, leading to the death of a truck driver and injuring a police officer stationed at Litan Police Station.

The injured officer received initial medical assistance on-site before being transported to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal for further treatment. His current condition remains unclear.

Increased Security Measures

In response to the attack, additional security forces were dispatched to the area, and extensive search operations were initiated to locate the perpetrators.

Separately, the Shangkhai Village Authority reported that five Kuki women suffered minor injuries from tear gas shells during the security operation aimed at facilitating the movement of goods along the highway.

Current Situation

The village authority confirmed that the injured women received medical care from security personnel and are now out of danger.
