WFI Confirms Participation Details

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) announced today that Vinesh Phogat will compete in the 53kg category during the Asian Games 2026 selection trials. According to the WFI, the weigh-in for all categories, including the Women's 53kg, took place at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi as per the established schedule. All eligible wrestlers, including Phogat, completed the necessary procedures.

The WFI further stated that all wrestlers meeting the requirements are cleared to participate in the upcoming trials. Phogat weighed in at 53.9 kg and is set to compete against Meenakshi Goyat and Antim Panghal in the trials. The winner will represent India at the continental event later this year.

Court Oversight for Fair Trials

Following a directive from the Delhi High Court, Aditi Chauhan from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and M.M. Somaiya from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) are serving as observers during the trials at IG Stadium. WFI President Sanjay Singh is also in attendance.

On Friday, the Supreme Court granted interim relief to Phogat and requested her response to a petition from the WFI contesting her participation in the trials. The case is set to be reviewed next on Monday, June 1.

In a ruling on May 22, the Delhi High Court mandated that Phogat be allowed to compete in the selection trials scheduled for May 30 and 31. The court also ordered that the trials be recorded on video and conducted under the supervision of independent observers appointed by the SAI and IOA to ensure a transparent selection process. This directive was issued by a Division Bench consisting of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia while addressing Phogat's appeal against a previous interim order.
